Luke the Shep, Meet The River's Official Honorary K9

For those who spent all of quarantine with their pups, today's the day to give them a little extra treat. National Dog Day was started in 2004 and continues today with more dog owners than before as ownership increased by eleven-percent in 2020 according to the American Pet Products Association. The day is meant to celebrate those furry friends that comfort us during rough times and those who save lives. And for those who don't have a dog, this could be the perfect time to adopt as many studies have shown that pet ownership has benefits to mental and physical health.

Excuse me as a PROUD dog mom to talk about my Honorary K9 Luke the Shep

STORY FROM THE BRANFORD PD:

We were so honored to host a kind of “K9 Day”event yesterday to thank some really big advocates of Police K9’s. We are so thankful Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove and The Adams Family Foundation helped us honor Renee Dinino and Mia Phinney.

Mia Phinney of “Mia’s Mission” has a dream of being a K9 Officer one day and gifts her homemade dog toys to as many K9’s as she can! She’s already taken care of 70 K9’s! Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz presented her with a gift from the White House and spoke on the importance of supporting and advocating for animals. The Lieutenant Governor definitely has a new “nephew” in K9 Arrow as well!

Renee DiNino has gone out of her way to advocate for animals and support K9 handlers across the state, consistently featuring them on Iheartradio and WFSB. As a thank you for all that she has done, First Selectman Cosgrove and Sgt Carney swore in her dog “Luke” as an honorary K9 for the day. Luke has Degenerative Myelopathy and this was on his bucket list. Luke absolutely adored the First Selectman, and wouldn’t leave his side!

The Adams Family Foundation also made generous donations to the Branford K9 Unit and the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter! It was such a pleasure meeting them and finding out about how the foundation got started and their family!

Special thank you to everyone that helped make this the fun, relaxed day we wanted it to be! Thank you to Iheartradio, River 105.9, WFSB, Director Laura Burban, Jamie from Bear’s Smokehouse, Dunkin and their awesome staff!

Maybe we should make this “K9 for the day” adventure and annual thing!
