A Memorial Day weekend initiative by Tunnel to Towers Foundation paid off 25 mortgages for families across 13 states including two Southern California Gold Star families honoring Austin Wampler and Juan Calderon. Wampler died from service-connected cancer in 2025, while Calderon was killed in Afghanistan in 2004, and the mortgage payoffs are intended to ease financial burdens for the families they left behind. The organization says donor support makes the program possible as it continues efforts to assist military families and first responders. This year, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, Tunnel to Towers plans to provide 343 mortgage-free homes in tribute to the 343 members of the New York City Fire Department who died responding to the attacks.
