A longtime Denny’s employee in Arizona is being celebrated this week for both his birthday and nearly five decades of service. Barney Mullen, a busser hired in the late 1970s, has worked at the same central Phoenix location for 48 years and is known by coworkers and customers for his dedication and friendly presence.
Mullen’s consistent presence and strong work ethic have made him a well-known figure at the restaurant. Coworkers describe him as a positive influence in the workplace, and he’s recognized as a trailblazer for employees with intellectual disabilities. Over the years, he’s built close relationships at work, with many of his colleagues becoming like family.
Leaders from Lura Turner Homes, a nonprofit that supports adults with developmental disabilities where Mullen lives, say his story reflects loyalty and the impact of small, everyday acts of kindness. To honor him, the restaurant hosted a fundraiser earlier this week, donating 20% of sales to Lura Turner Homes.
