Earlier this week, a U.S. Marine veteran received a surprise from former New England Patriots player Rob Gronkowski and the NFL’s Salute to Service program. Eddie Peña was awarded two tickets and a trip for two to Super Bowl LX during a visit to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ facility in Florida. He says he thought he was there to speak on behalf of the Marine Corps Association when the surprise took place.
Peña, who served 20 years in the Marines and is now the CEO of his own business, describes the moment he met Gronkowski as overwhelming. In a staged surprise, Gronk revealed himself and personally presented the Super Bowl tickets. Pena says he wasn’t expecting the gift and describes the experience as emotional.
Peña initially planned to bring a fellow Marine to the game, but later decided to take his son after encouragement from family and friends. He says he’s grateful for the opportunity to attend the Super Bowl with his son and views the experience as a sign of appreciation for his military service. Peña will also spend time with Gronkowski and other NFL figures in the USAA Salute to Service lounge before the big game.
