An elderly woman in Pompano Beach, Florida, recently received some unexpected help after a stranger learned that she was still working to pay her bills. April Steele saw 92-year-old Muriel Connick working in a dressing room at a Burlington store and was surprised by her age. Steele says it “just seemed unbelievable” that she would need to still be working at her age.
Connick explained that her Social Security income wasn’t enough to cover expenses like rent, car payments, insurance, utilities, and phone service. Steele initially shared the retail worker’s story in a local social media group, where others suggested starting a crowdfunding campaign. Connick says she hadn’t expected such a response and thought Steele was only going to offer her a gift card.
The fundraiser quickly gained attention and within days had raised more than $60-thousand. Connick thanked the donors and said the support may allow her to fix her home and fully retire.
