A late-night traffic stop in Detroit last Friday turned urgent when Melvindale Police Officer Al Hasan discovered the driver was rushing his pregnant wife to the hospital while she was in active labor. Corporal Mohamed Hacham arrived to assist and soon realized that they wouldn’t be able to make it to the hospital and the delivery would need to happen on the roadside.
The dispatcher assisting the delivery via the radio was actually Hacham’s younger brother, who walked him through each step as the woman stayed in the vehicle. Body camera footage shows Hacham working carefully while staying calm, later crediting his brother’s voice for helping him stay focused.
The new mother says she was scared at the time but she’s now grateful for the officers’ help, and both she and her newborn daughter are healthy at home. Melvindale Interim Police Chief Chris Egan notes that both families felt the moment had a deep meaning. This was the second time Hacham has assisted in a life-saving situation, having helped save a choking toddler in 2023.
