Ashley Pruitt of North Little Rock, Arkansas, was adopted at birth through a closed adoption and spent decades searching for her birth family. This summer, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and recently began chemotherapy. During this difficult time, she received a text message from a woman identifying herself as her aunt, which led her to photos of her birth parents and other family members.
After 41 years, Pruitt recently got to meet her birth mother for the first time when her mother, brother, and cousin traveled from Texas to see her. Surrounded by her fiancé, best friend, and children, Pruitt greeted her mother with flowers and the two embraced in a long hug.
She’s scheduled to undergo a bilateral mastectomy this week. Her mother will be with her during the procedure and her father’s side of the family plans to fly in the next day to support her. Pruitt says the reunion has come at a time when she’s needed family support the most.
