How Much Do Americans Spend on Halloween?

Kids may get the most candy on Halloween, but they’re definitely not the only ones having fun. Now that spooky season is going strong, a new survey looks at how Americans are getting in the Halloween spirit this year. And it turns out, a lot of us are excited to have some holiday fun.

According to CIT Bank and Harris Poll’s new Halloween survey of 2,093 U.S. adults, 79% plan to celebrate Halloween this year and they’re not afraid of shelling out some cash to make the most of it.

  • Households are expected to spend an average of $420 between costumes, candy, decorations and festivities.
  • But young people are even more eager to get their scream on, as 93% of Gen Z and 87% of millennials plan to celebrate Halloween, compared to 76% of Gen X and 66% of boomers.
  • Gen Z is the age group expected to spend the most on their holiday fun, an average of $622.
  • Halloween budgets for older generations aren’t quite as big, with boomers only planning to spend an average of $93.
  • Families with kids at home will splurge the most on celebrating Halloween, at an average of $652. That’s more than triple the average spending of those who don’t have kids ($215).
  • Costumes are a non-negotiable for some folks, including 52% of adults with children at home who are planning to dress up this year and 29% of those who don’t have kids at home and will be wearing costumes.
  • People expect to spend an average of $58 on costumes for themselves and $87 for their families.
  • A third of adults are even planning to buy a costume for their pet, spending an average of $22.
  • Half (49%) of families with kids will be trick-or-treating this year, compared to 17% of those without kids.
  • Haunted houses, hayrides and other holiday attractions will be visited by 41% and 34% will also be hosting or attending a Halloween party.
  • When it comes to the essentials - we’re talking candy here - about half of those polled are willing to buy in bulk (57%) or shop at a discount retailer (49%) to save a little money, but only 24% would switch to a cheaper candy.
