Just before noon at the Akron Marathon on Saturday, a runner collapsed near the finish line. Fortunately, nurse practitioner Dan Molnar, who was waiting for his fiancée to complete her first marathon, saw the commotion and jumped over barricades to help. He immediately began CPR alongside Akron firefighters and the Summa Health medical team.
Molnar says he performed CPR for about two minutes, restoring the runner’s pulse briefly before it stopped again. After continuing chest compressions for another three minutes, the man regained his pulse and became more alert, even trying to get up. He was transported to a hospital, where he’s now recovering.
In a joint statement, the Akron Marathon, City of Akron Fire Department, and Summa Health expressed gratitude to first responders, volunteers, and bystanders for their swift actions. The runner’s family also released a statement thanking everyone involved, including Molnar and a person who prayed with them during the emergency.
