More than 80% of Americans think tipping has gotten out of control, according to a recent survey from PlayUSA. With so many businesses now requesting tips on everything from buying a bottle of water to paying for a shirt at a retail store, it’s not surprising so many of us are experiencing tip fatigue. But a new study suggests how well people tip may depend on their zip code.
- BLogic Systems’ 2025 Generosity Index is out, revealing the states where customers are tipping the least in 2025.
- The payment processing company’s research doesn’t just measure how much people tip, it compares average tip percentage to after-tax income, showing which states are most generous relative to what residents earn.
- That means high-income, high-cost states look worse, because tipping more doesn’t count for as much if your paycheck is a lot larger.
- As a result, folks in West Virginia look like great tippers. The average tip in the rural lower-per capita income state is 21%, higher than wealthier states.
- Kentucky is right behind them at 20.7%.
- But California, a high-earning state, comes in dead last. The average tip there is just 17.8% and they have the lowest generosity score in the country.
