In March, nine-year-old Gus Deterding of Minnesota survived a life-threatening accident when he fell face-first onto an arrow in his driveway. Gus was helping pack for a hunting trip with his father when he slipped on ice while holding a bow and arrow. The arrow entered his head near his nose, and despite pulling it out himself, he initially appeared to have only a minor cut.
Doctors later discovered the arrow had traveled through the center of Gus’s brain and stopped just two centimeters from exiting his skull. After being airlifted to Children’s Minnesota Hospital, Gus underwent further scans, testing, and observation. Dr. Ken Maslonka, who’s worked at the hospital for 28 years, says he’d never seen a case like it and expected far worse based on the scans.
Remarkably, Gus is now completely back to normal and showing no lasting effects from the injury. Dr. Maslonka describes it as either incredible luck or divine intervention. His parents, Abby and Dave Deterding, believe it was a miracle, saying, “We’re just thankful, so grateful.”
