Little League umpire Jeff Hiserodt collapsed near home plate during a recent game in Los Angeles County after suffering a heart attack. Immediately, bystanders, including players and coaches, came to his aid and called out for help when they couldn’t find a pulse. Sitting in the stands was Jen Poole, a palliative care doctor from Cedars-Sinai, who rushed to the field to begin CPR.
She performed CPR for seven to 10 minutes, and despite her small frame, she managed to restart Hiserodt’s heart multiple times before emergency services arrived. The umpire says he “died” out there on the field and he credits Poole with bringing him back to life, calling her actions rare and heroic.
Both of them hope the incident will encourage more people to learn CPR and support having defibrillators at community venues. Poole says it’s essential to be ready to help when someone’s hurt and Hiserodt thanked her and others involved in saving his life. He also says he appreciated everyone who reached out during his recovery.
