GOOD NEWS! Paralyzed College Grad Crosses Stage With High-Tech Robotic Help

On Saturday, 22-year-old Jaiden Picot graduated from Virginia Union University and walked across the graduation stage with the help of a robotic exoskeleton and two therapists. He was left paralyzed from the chest down after a truck struck him while he was riding an e-scooter to work last August, resulting in a severe spinal cord injury. Despite his condition, he completed his business degree and took part in the commencement ceremony in Richmond, Virginia.

Picot says he was “thrilled” to be able to walk across the stage, calling it a moment he never expected to experience, especially after missing his high school graduation due to the pandemic. After his accident, he spent months in rehabilitation, working on regaining strength while also staying on track with his studies. His physical therapist praised the grad’s determination, calling it a testament to his strong work ethic.

Picot credits his mother, girlfriend, and care team for supporting him through his recovery. He also says he hopes that his story will inspire others not to give up, noting the value of emerging technology in helping people overcome physical limitations. With his degree completed, Picot plans to focus on continuing his recovery and taking a well-earned break.
