While vacationing with his family in Bermuda, Massachusetts firefighter Michael Desouza helped save a 75-year-old Catholic priest from Canada, who was found floating unresponsive in shallow water. Desouza and a 911 dispatcher, who’s also from Massachusetts, pulled the man ashore, where they began CPR, successfully reviving him to a semi-conscious state. A pair of surgeons nearby on the beach then took over care, before the priest was transported to a local hospital.
The elderly priest had been on a cruise with his family celebrating his 50th anniversary of ordination when the incident occurred. After receiving medical attention, he fully recovered and was able to return home safely.
The New Bedford Fire Department shared the good news on social media, praising Desouza’s quick thinking and heroism and saying that his actions reflect the department’s motto of “Service Above Self.” The event drew attention both for the fortunate outcome and for showing the positive impact emergency training can have. The local community and department celebrated Desouza’s role in the priest’s recovery and safe return home.
