San Bernardino, California, 10-year-old Alisa Perales is set to graduate next month from Crafton Hills College with two associate degrees. She began taking college-level classes at the age of eight and will be the youngest student to ever graduate from the Yucaipa-based community college. Her final GPA will be close to a 4.0.
Alisa describes her experience as “very fun” and compares it to playing outside or riding a bike. She credits her homeschooling background and her father’s encouragement for helping her stay focused and committed to her studies. When she first started at Crafton, she was nervous, but meeting friendly people helped ease her transition into public school life.
In addition to her academic achievements, Alisa used what she learned in her political science studies to file a federal lawsuit challenging youth voting rights. If she had stayed one more semester at Crafton, she would have completed two more degrees in computer science and physics. Looking ahead, Alisa plans to pursue a career in the artificial intelligence technology industry.
