Monette Marchman of Sumrall, Mississippi, was given up for adoption at birth and only recently learned she has four sisters she’d never known about. The reunion became possible when the sisters’ birth mother, who was suffering from dementia, mentioned that there was a fifth sister, prompting sisters Jana Paruginog, Theresa Ponce, Lena Guzman, and Tam Caballero to begin the search for her.
With help from her daughter, Marchman connected through a DNA match with one of her sisters’ children, which led to the sisters speaking for the first time earlier this year. “We spent two hours talking,” Ponce says, “It felt like we had known each other all these years.” Shortly after, the four sisters traveled across the country to Mississippi to meet Marchman in person, solidifying their bond.
Since their reunion, the five of them have taken road trips, met their new nieces and nephews, and created lasting memories. They are now planning a family cruise to continue making up for lost time. Marchman says she feels like she now has a whole family and she looks forward to a wonderful future together.
