There’s a lot to love about big cities, from the diverse social and cultural experiences they offer to the career opportunities available. But beyond the bright lights luring visitors in, these cities are densely populated and that comes with issues like pollution, pests and poor sanitation. So, it’s no secret that cities can be grubbier than rural areas, but which ones are the dirtiest? A new report is calling them out.
- HouseFresh has just released a list of the Dirtiest Cities in America.
- Their Indoor health quality experts analyzed 12.3-million sanitation-related complaints to the U.S.’s non-emergency 311 complaint system to see which metro areas need to clean up most.
- They ranked locations based on the number of sanitation-related reports per 100-thousand residents, which include everything from clean drinking water to sewage disposal, littered streets to missed garbage pick-ups.
- New York City may have a reputation for being messy, but it didn’t even land in the top 10 here, it’s 17th overall.
- So, what is the dirtiest city in the country? Surprisingly, Baltimore comes in at number one.
- It has a “staggeringly high complaint rate of 47,295 per 100-thousand population,” investigators report, adding that “Baltimore is home to six of the dirtiest ZIP codes.
- On the flip side, the cleanest city is Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which only had 309 complaints about cleanliness.
