Teens Andy Goforth and Daven Hug are being praised for helping save more than a dozen people from a fire at the Village Apartments retirement community in Nashville, Illinois. Last Wednesday evening, they noticed smoke while driving home and rushed to the scene. Hearing people screaming, they immediately called 911, but after learning that emergency responders wouldn’t be there right away, they entered the building themselves to help evacuate residents.
Inside the smoke-filled building, the teens split up across floors to wake sleeping residents, many who are elderly and can’t hear well. Despite the thick smoke limiting visibility, they managed to guide over a dozen people to safety. Illinois State Representative Charlie Meier credits Goforth and Hug’s "great and heroic actions" for preventing a potential tragedy.
A few residents required medical treatment, with two airlifted to a hospital for burns and one treated locally for smoke inhalation. Displaced residents were given temporary shelter at a nearby church through the Red Cross. Although they’re being hailed as heroes, Goforth and Hug humbly say they believed anyone else in their situation would have done the same thing.
