An anonymous man recently walked into a McDonald's in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and gave the cashier a wad of cash, saying he’d like to pay for every customer’s meal until the money ran out. Christine Yee, who co-owns the franchise with her father, initially questioned whether the cash was counterfeit, but local police confirmed it was legitimate. So on Wednesday, from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m., 356 free meals were given away thanks to the stranger’s donation.
Yee says customers often perform small acts of generosity, but this was unlike anything she’d seen before. To celebrate the occasion, she brought in McDonald’s mascot Grimace and handed out cards with each free meal explaining the gesture. The card noted the gift came from an “anonymous Haverhill neighbor” and encouraged recipients to “pay it forward.”
Inspired by the act of kindness, Yee and her father also made a donation to the Ronald McDonald House charity. “We were given a special opportunity to spread some kindness,” she says, expressing hope that those who received meals would continue the spirit of generosity.
