A Meals on Wheels volunteer in Sacramento recently rescued a man who’d been trapped in his collapsed bed for three days. Volunteer Patricia Escobar entered the home and feared the worst when she didn’t see anyone. Then she found the man on the floor in his bedroom, confused and unable to get up, and she immediately called 911.
Escobar has been a volunteer for a year and says this wasn’t the first time she’d encountered emergencies during her delivery route. “I’ve been through it, so nothing surprises me anymore,” she says. Executive Director Mindy Klick confirms that similar situations occur more often than people realize. She praised Escobar for her quick action, calling her a hero.
Escobar says this incident highlights the importance of maintaining contact with clients. “Keep opening that door,” she says, “As long as that door opens, we’re good.” Meals on Wheels is always on the lookout for volunteers who are compassionate and willing to support the most vulnerable members of the community.
