Last Thursday morning, a school bus carrying 15 middle school students in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, caught fire, but thankfully all the students were safely evacuated thanks to the bus driver’s quick actions. Parents and school officials are now crediting the driver and annual bus evacuation drills for making sure all the kids got off the bus in time.
Students describe hearing loud booms before the driver ordered them off the bus. One 13-year-old student recalls the panic as the kids ran away just before flames fully engulfed the vehicle. Nearby residents reported seeing smoke and flames and one witness described how a child had just boarded the bus before the explosion.
After the incident, another district vehicle transported the students to school. Parents expressed gratitude that everyone escaped safely, with one father saying it was reassuring to hear the bus driver had the situation under control. The local fire department and state police are investigating the cause of the fire.
