Four children were killed when flames tore through a two-family home in Somers on Tuesday night, according to the town’s first selectman.

First Selectman Tim Keeney said that the children were ages 5, 6, 8, and 12. They were members of the same family.

They said a litter of puppies was also killed. Other pets were rescued.

They also said one firefighter suffered burns, but was expected to be ok.

Crews continued to put out hotspots at the Quality Avenue home early Wednesday morning.

“There were 20 or so [firefighters] involved. Another five fire departments were involved,” Keeney said. “This is the first incident I’ve been a witness to and it takes a lot of time to get over it.”

Officials estimated that 11 people were forced from the home.
