Get ready for plenty of exercise, fun and games with Bernie. This handsome young fellow is a 1 year old Retriever mix dog with a beautiful cream colored coat, a classic Retriever face and a big heart just waiting for a new home and folks to love.
Bernie was an owner surrender to our Southern shelter partner after he was adopted through a different shelter to an elderly couple who realized he was too big and energetic for them. Bernie is a medium sized dog (31-60 pounds) but his sweet personality is all gentle giant who adores playing with children and other dogs. It is not known at this time whether Bernie enjoys spending time with cats.
Bernie is working on his house, leash and crate training. Rescue dogs can have accidents as they become accustomed to a new home, new family and new routines. If crate training is planned, Bernie needs a crate that is big enough for him to stand and turn around in as well as lie down comfortably. Crates should be cozy, happy places for dogs to hang out and Bernie needs time to explore his crate and go in and out as he wishes.
Retrievers are smart, eager to please, and often treat motivated. Spend time teaching Bernie, reward him with praise and treats, make sure to have plenty of fun and activity built into each day and Bernie will love you with all his big heart.
The adoption fee for Bernie is $500. That includes the cost of spaying/neutering, up to date vaccinations, foster care, rescue and transportation fees.
To get the ball rolling, head over to our Adoption Application and submit your application today.
A Dog Star representative will contact you within 24 hours.

About Dog Star Rescue:
Dog Star Rescue, a non-profit, volunteer-run organization, is a dog rescue organization based out of the Hartford CT area. We work closely with shelters in the South as well as New England states to save the lives of loving and loyal dogs who have lost their way and find themselves on death row. Our team of wonderful volunteers get these adoptable dogs the medical and emotional care they need so they can transition into a loving forever home. To date, we’ve placed over 4,000 dogs with new families.
All of our amazing volunteers are unpaid and donate their time because of their passion for helping dogs. They spend significant time each week helping guide dogs to a wonderful new life. If you ask our volunteers, they’ll tell you they do it for a wide variety of reasons, including personal satisfaction in helping address a nationwide problem, their love of dogs, and a desire to have fun socializing with like-minded people. Dog Star is always looking for new volunteers to join our group, so if you would like to be a part of our organization, please check out our Volunteer Opportunities page.
Dog Star Rescue, Inc. is a grass-roots effort started by a group of dog lovers with experience in the rescue world. Learn about our organization’s mission, along with our reasons for adopting a rescue dog and information about some of our current volunteers. To check out our recommendations for other companies and services that love dogs almost as much as we do, see our Friends of Dog Star Rescue page.
What’s the meaning behind our name?
The name Dog Star comes from the common name for the star Sirius, reflecting its prominence in its constellation, Canis Major (Greater Dog). The symbolism of the star as a guide to a safe passage is what we strive to do for our adoptable dogs as we find them a new life with a loving family.
