In rescue we often tell stories of heroes and villains… stories where there is someone to blame, a daring rescue, and (we hope) a happily ever after. Life, though, is usually not a fairytale. And while there are definitely helpers, if not heroes, there are usually far more stories of sad events and hard circumstances than there are stories of wicked stepsisters or true villains. This is one of those stories.
Merlina (tiger) and Ella (black and white) are two year old sisters who were surrendered because of allergic reactions by a child in the family. (Please do not be unkind, there were many tears over this decision.) Both were scared at the shelter, but Ella was particularly frightened when we had to separate them for vetting and spay.
We gave Ella the bottom half of a cat carrier, lined with a soft bed, and she hid in it, barely peeping over the sides. She let us handle her but she was clearly miserable. She was shut down. When we opened the divider between Ella and Merlina’s condos, Merlina immediately went over to her sister and curled into her, comforting her and grooming her. That is when this photo was taken. Obviously after seeing this, we promised that they would go home together.
Both cats are pretty scared currently. We are working with them, but like a lot of cats who come from homes they find the shelter loud and overwhelming. They will need a home with someone who has some cat experience, who will give them time to feel safe again, and who will work with them- at their speed- to reassure them. Toys, soft touches, quiet voices, and time will eventually work their magic.
No evil queens in this story. No prince on a noble steed. No magic potion or fairy godmother to make everything perfect with the flash of a wand. But with some helpers, and with one another to rely on, we expect that Ella and Merlina will soon find their happily ever after.
