Meet Canela — an adorable, petite Pitty princess! Canela is about 2.5 years old, and she came to our shelter after she was found roaming near a wooded area in town. Unfortunately, this is a common area where we find sweet Pit mixes that aren't in the greatest condition, and that was true of poor Canela. She first arrived at the Meriden Shelter very skinny, freezing, and petrified — but with a little time she has been learning she can trust the shelter staff.
She is very food motivated and is starting to show an interest in playing with toys! Canela is still a bit hand shy with new people, but she is learning that she actually likes to be petted and get attention from people. She will follow the shelter staff around outside in the backyard and she is learning that the leash isn't so scary.
Canela needs a little work on her basic obedience, but her food motivation makes her very trainable. Meriden is looking for a calm household for Canela where she can decompress and finally know what it feels like to be safe and loved! With a little patience, this girl will make a great companion!
At this time, they believe Canela should be the only dog in her home. She can interact with other dogs fine, but we think it would be best if she does not live with another dog. With the amount of scarring on her face, neck, and ears, and where she was found, the shelter believes she was likely used for training other dogs for illegal fighting.
Canela was tested with a cat and she did completely fine with her, so they think she would be fine in a home with a dog savvy cat. And Canela can go to a home with children 12 years old and older.

About Saving Paws
Saving Paws, originally called The M.A.C. Pack, was founded in 2011. Initially, it was a small-dedicated group of private citizens helping the animals in the Meriden pound to get extra vet care and visibility via Facebook and PetFinder to promote adoptions. This successful group has flourished over the last five years and recently reorganized as a 501(c)(3) Public Charity under the new name of Saving Paws. The new name reflects the future plans to support not only Meriden's animals and community but all Connecticut based municipalities and rescue organizations. Saving Paws' efforts have helped save and re-home over a 2000 animals in just five years! Saving Paws also created a new pound environment that is comforting and friendly to both animals and adopters. The new environment helps the animals cope with the stress of kennel life and also puts adopters and visitors at ease because it is obvious to anyone who visits our facility that our animals are loved and cared for. It’s a tough situation, but we do the very best we can and our continued success is proof that our efforts are working!
