Two-year-old Cowboy is no western hero. He doesn't want to ride off alone into the sunset. He doesn't want to suffer valiantly for a noble cause or to arrive in the nick of time to save the town. Cowboy probably would not even like riding the plains. "Too cold" we can imagine him complaining. "Too lonely... and not enough snacks".
In short, Cowboy likes his comfort. Chief amongst those comforts are regular mealtimes, toys, and people who understand and love him as he is, not expecting him to be Clint Eastwood or John Wayne. He wouldn’t mind being the romantic lead, but if stealing the heart of the beautiful rancher’s daughter meant risking life or limb, we suspect Cowboy would pass.
Cowboy has been extraordinarily sweet and gentle with our volunteers and has been fine, if occasionally rambunctious, with other respectful cats. Despite this, we are recommending that Cowboy go to a home with no small children. This is because he was reportedly sometimes nippy in his former home. While we have not seen that behavior, we suspect that Cowboy can become overstimulated when he has too little exercise and too much rough petting. Like most cats, Cowboy wants love and attention but needs to have his boundaries respected.
Again, however, we want to emphasize that at the shelter, Cowboy has been a gentleman. His favorite things are napping in a small cat tree, rolling around in all the toys he can find, and sitting with his favorite volunteers. He may be more couch potato than cowboy, but our Cowboy has managed to steal a few hearts all the same.
