Meet Maverick! The Guinea Pig!

This week’s pet is Maverick, a one-month-old guinea pig. CHS and other shelters in the Northeast are seeing an abundance of guinea pigs these past few years. They multiply rapidly, making it especially important you don’t house males and females together as doing so can quickly overwhelm a pet parent. When Maverick came to CHS with his siblings, he spent some time in a volunteer foster home, growing big and strong (he now weighs about one pound!). Now he is old enough for a home and a human of his own, and may even enjoy living with another young, male guinea pig. Guinea pigs live an average of 6-8 years, and require a proper diet of special pellets and fresh veggies—they need lots of vitamin C! Guinea pigs make wonderful pets. They’re docile and enjoy being picked up and carried when properly handled. Maverick may even be willing to learn a few tricks for the right person!
