Here is Renee's interview with the Connecticut State Department of Children and Families, including: Commissioner Vannessa Dorantes, LMSW, Ken Mysogland, MSW (Bureau Chief of External Operations/Affairs), and Jacqueline Ford, MSW (Statewide Foster Care and Adoption Recruitment Specialist/Heart Gallery Exhibit Coordinator).

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and this interview offers a better understanding of how DCF assists families across the state. DCF receives over 100,000 phone calls a year, however, despite common misconception, over 97 percent of reported cases result in families remaining together. The interview explains in depth what you should do if you think a child is being abused or neglected and some of the different ways DCF aids families with their services.

According to the US Department of Health & Human Services:

By ensuring that parents have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, we can help prevent child abuse and neglect by creating strong and thriving children, youth, and families in our communities. Research shows that protective factors are present in healthy families. Promoting these factors is among the most effective ways to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect. The factors are:

  • Nurturing and attachment
  • Knowledge of parenting and of child and youth development
  • Parental resilience
  • Social connections
  • Concrete supports for parents
  • Social and emotional competence of children
