Post-Holiday Cleaning to Make Your Home Feel New Again

After all the holiday chaos, it’s a great time to get things clean to create a space that feels lighter, calmer, and more put-together. After the last guests depart and the holiday decor is packed away, it’s a great time to get some tasks done on the to-do list. Here are the top tasks that will help your home feel less chaotic after the holidays.

  • Disinfect High-Touch Surfaces: Use disinfecting wipes to clean every high-touch area, such as light switches, doorknobs, cabinet hardware, remotes, phones, and keyboards. Make sure the surfaces stay visibly wet to kill bacteria.
  • Freshen Rugs and Carpet: Use oxygen-based bleach powder and water to clean stains from the holidays and foot traffic. Lightly sprinkle the carpet with baking soda and let it sit overnight to absorb odors.
  • Clean Out the Fridge: Your refrigerator is probably filled with old leftovers and in need of a good cleaning. Check expiration dates on condiments, clean vegetable and cheese drawers, and wipe every surface.
  • Clean the Oven: While you’re in the kitchen, you can multitask and clean the oven. Place a large baking dish with water in the oven and set the oven to 400°F for 30 minutes to fill the oven with steam. Use a sponge to spread baking soda and water paste in the oven to get the baked-on mess out.
  • Shine Mirrors: Having shiny mirrors will help brighten and lighten every room. Start at the top and wipe away the dust and filmy residue.
  • Change HVAC Filters and Dust Vents: To improve your air quality and reduce the dust blowing around, change the filters in your HVAC system and use an electrostatic microfiber duster to go over every vent and return grate in your house.
  • Catch Up on Laundry: It's easy to forget to do laundry during the holidays, so now is a good time to address stained clothing. Inspect table linens for stains, wash the bedding in the guest room, and clean your holiday wear and winter items.
