If you're looking for some fun, fall-inspired things to do during the fleeting fall weekends that don’t cost a ton, we’ve got you covered. Fall often feels like the busiest time of the year, and as much as I’d love to spend every weekend of fall enjoying the season, the time is limited. Here are free or cheap activities to fill your fall calendar and make the most of the season.
- Host a Fall Dinner Party: A dinner party is the ideal way to spend an evening with friends or family. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant; you can make it a potluck, and everyone can bring a dish to share. Maybe even spice up the event with a chili cookoff! Good food and great company are all you need for a beautiful evening.
- Take a Nature Walk or Scenic Drive: Make the most of the fall foliage's beauty. An easy hike through a nearby park is a great form of exercise and the perfect way to immerse yourself in nature. Or take a drive in your car and enjoy the picturesque views.
- Go Apple or Pumpkin Picking: Enjoy the beauty and nostalgia of the season by apple or pumpkin picking. Look for an orchard or patch near you that’s free to enter, so you’ll only pay for what you pick. Load up a basket with your favorite varieties, have a pumpkin carving contest, or find a cozy fall recipe to bake with your haul.
- Cozy Up with a Fall Movie: Cuddle up with a few classic fall flicks. Pull out some fluffy blankets, pop some popcorn, and hit play. Need some help narrowing down a film? When Harry Met Sally, Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic, Ghostbusters, and The Addams Family are all crowd favorites. For a sweet throwback, try Casper or It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
- Go to a Local Craft Fair or Neighborhood Festival: See what local festivals, craft fairs, or farmers’ markets are happening in your town. Many of these events are free to enter and offer fall snacks, crafty projects, or special attractions at affordable prices. It’s a great time to spend a day outdoors, support your community, and get festive for the fall season!
- Support your Local Football Team: It wouldn’t be a fall without some football! Even if you’re not a big sports fan, it’s fun to get dressed up and cheer on the team. Soak up the Friday night lights at your local high school’s football game or tailgate at the nearest college stadium.
