Could Binge-Watching Actually Be Good for You?

Binge-watching TV may seem like a bad habit, but a new study suggests that there may be some benefits to it. According to the study, binge-watching TV shows one episode after another may be good for your mental health. Here’s what the researchers found, suggesting that it might not be bad to watch “just one more episode” a hundred times over.

  • Watching episodes of dramas such as "Breaking Bad,” "The Sopranos," or "Mad Men" can help people get through tough times.
  • People who enjoy marathon sessions of watching movies or TV shows are more likely to remember stories and continue engaging with them through daydreams and fantasies.
  • Binge-watching may help viewers build “mental worlds” where stories continue even after they have finished the series. These stories may help people cope when stressed.
  • Binge-watching can help make stories more memorable. Binge-watching can help viewers connect plot threads within the bigger picture, especially in longer series with numerous characters.
  • People who binge-watch are more likely to process and think about stories after they’ve finished than people who watch slowly.

There’s a lot of debate about whether consuming media is good or bad, but it depends on the content, why people are watching, the individual’s psychological background, and the context.
