The Most Popular Drinks to Order on a First Date

Most people don’t put much thought into what their drink of choice could say about them on a first date. Many people consider their appearance and word choice to make a good first impression. But new research suggests that the drink someone orders at the bar can reveal a great deal about their dating confidence and self-assurance.

According to a survey of 2-thousand single young adults across the country, more than half have at least one alcoholic drink on a first date (57%).

  • The people who appear to be the most confident daters say shots are their go-to drink. They’re followed by people who have their drinks neat or prefer classic margaritas.
  • The singles who are more likely to initiate a connection prefer their cocktails on the rocks or drink tequila.
  • More than half (56%) of singles identify as straight tequila - seeing themselves as bold, emotionally open, and spontaneous. Those who identify as palomas are bubbly, lighthearted, and easygoing, while those who see themselves as margaritas enjoy being outdoors, living without regrets, and taking chances.
  • 7-in-10 daters say they’re confident enough to “shoot their shot” when they meet someone new.
  • The most popular dating trend for young singles is being upfront and direct about what they want. The days of “playing it cool” are out, and engaging in earlier conversations about life goals and relationship status is a big trend. Daytime dating is also popular because it allows for relaxed, low-pressure dates.
  • Twice as many singles say it’s easier to connect or make the first move in person (40%) than on dating apps (20%), but a third sees both as good options.
