Fall Asleep Faster with These Not-So-Common Tricks

It’s not always easy to get a full night of sleep, although we all know it’s important. We often hear from health experts that adults need seven hours of sleep each night to maintain good health, enhance memory, and more. There’s no shortage of sleep advice out there, but so many of us still struggle to fall asleep and stay asleep. By now, you’ve probably heard the advice to stay off screens before bed and stick to a sleep schedule. But these are some less common tips and tricks that might help you fall asleep faster.   

  • Fuzzy socks are your friend: Warming up your toes lowers your core body temperature. Soaking your feet in a warm bath or wearing fuzzy socks can help you feel drowsier and may even feel like a natural sleep aid.  
  • Fight to stay awake: Although it sounds counterintuitive, trying not to sleep may help you fall asleep. If you stop worrying about not being able to sleep, it will ease your mind, and sleep will eventually kick in.  
  • Anywhere but inside: Imagining you’re out in nature can help fight anxiety-filled thoughts we get at night. Thinking about being outdoors promotes relaxation and reduces stress.  
  • Blow some bubbles: It sounds silly, but blowing bubbles can have the same effect as breathing exercises, which can lower heart rate and blood pressure.  
  • Start over: If you can’t fall asleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed and do something else. If your mind is racing, try listening to quiet music or a relaxing book before trying again.
