It’s no secret that a lot of people in the country are overweight, and while there are overweight people in every state, there are some states where more of the population is considered “fat,” and a new report reveals which ones they are. 

  • WalletHub set out to determine the “Fattest” states in the country.
  • They looked at each state on a variety of factors in areas of obesity and overweight prevalence, health consequences and food and fitness.
  • Factors considered include share of overweight and obese adults and children, share of adults with high cholesterol, obesity-related death rate, fast food restaurants per capita and more.
  • Overall, West Virginia was named the “Fattest” state in the country, scoring a 74.66.
  • It ranked number one for health consequences and two for obesity and overweight prevalence.
  • Mississippi, which ranks two overall, is tops for obesity and overweight prevalence.

A few other notes from the study:

  • South Dakota is the state with the highest percentage of overweight adults, while West Virginia has the lowest.
  • Mississippi has the highest percentage of obese adults, while Colorado has the lowest.
  • Missouri has the highest percentage of overweight children, while Michigan has the lowest.
  • Mississippi as the highest percentage of obese children, while Hawaii has the lowest
