A lot of new babies were born in 2020, and while some people may have picked unique names for their little tot, some tried and true monikers still seem to be the most popular out there.
- BabyCenter has just come out with their list of the Top Baby Names for 2020
- Sophia once again is the top name for girls, a spot it’s held since 2010.
- Liam is tops for boys for a second year in a row.
- For boys, Mateo lands in the Top Ten for the first time, bumping Muhammed out.
- For girls, Riley is the biggest mover, jumping six spots to three. It’s also the only girl name in the Top Ten that doesn’t end with the sound “ah.”
- Several names crossed over to other genders, with Noah, Palmer and Sutton becoming popular for girls, and Santana and Emery making the boys' list.

Of course folks can find inspiration for their baby’s name in a variety of places. Popular trends in baby names include:
- Honoring lost greats– the name Kobe, after the late great Kobe Bryant, was the biggest riser on the list, climbing 379 spots to 216 for boys. In addition, his daughter Gianna,who died with him, inspired folks, with the name moving up 52 spots to 224 on the girl’s list.
- Politically inspired names– Thanks to Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris, the name Kamala is up 100% from last year. Liberty, the name Meghan McCain chose for her daughter, is up 69 spots.
- Race relations- The current climate has had a negative effect on at least one name – Karen. Thanks to the negative connotations associated with the name it has dropped 153 spots on the list.
- Technology– Tech is also responsible for the decline in a name, with the name Alexa, given to Amazon’s voice-activated device, dropping 121 spots this year.
