Be an organ donor. Here's another reason why..
A traveling nurse who’s spent months helping save the lives of COVID-19 patients took a break to go to her home state of Minnesota to save the life of a toddler. Taylor Pikkarainen heard about a little boy who needed a new kidney because he was born with congenital nephrotic syndrome, a life-threatening condition that ultimately turns into kidney failure, and she says she knew almost immediately she wanted to be his donor.
The 27-year-old nurse quickly checked out the side effects and impact being a kidney donor would have on her life and within half an hour, she was signing up to give one of her kidneys to Bodie.
One of his siblings has the same condition and their mom, Gloria Hall, donated one of her kidneys to them, and their dad wasn’t a match, but Taylor was. They had a transplant in July and it was a success.
Now Taylor is sharing her story in hopes that she’ll inspire others to become organ donors. “It just feels really great that he’s healthy and happy,” she says. “I would 100% do it again.”
