Homes for the Brave is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission to provide housing and services necessary to help homeless individuals return to a productive and meaningful life. They operate three housing programs in Bridgeport:Homes for the Brave, a 42-bed transitional housing program for men;Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes, a 14-bed transitional housing program for women; and Waldorf House, a 9-bed permanent supportive housing program for formerly homeless individuals.

In addition to their housing programs, they offer services to the wider Veteran community, including a walk-in, drop-in Veterans’ Service Center, which offers a wide variety of programming throughout the month including therapy dog visits, meetings with Veteran representatives from federal legislators’ offices, movie afternoons, walking groups, and hosting AA meetings. The Training for Success Vocational & Educational Program offers employment services along with job prep workshops and computer skill classes. In 2019, Homes for the Brave Clinical Program launched to address the gap in services for mental health and substance abuse needs for homeless Veterans. Clinical programming includes access to recovery-oriented therapy.

The staff of HFTB works with each individual they serve to help secure income through employment and/or benefits, find safe and affordable housing, and make meaningful contributions to the community. Over the past year, they have been able to provide a total of 19,097 nights of safe shelter, 413 hours of computer education, 14,918 meals served, and 51 job placements. 94% of the individuals they served are veterans and 20% are women.
