Blind Engineer Invents “Smart Cane” To Help Blind Navigate

A high-tech cane called WeWalk has been developed to help blind people get around more efficiently on their own and it was invented by visually impaired engineer Kursat Ceylan. He’s the CEO and co-founder of Young Guru Academy, a Turkish non-profit and he understands firsthand the challenges blind people deal with, so he created WeWalk to help.

The smart cane uses built-in speakers, a voice assistant, Google, and sensors that warn about obstacles over chest level by sending vibrations. “As a blind person, when I am at the Metro station, I don’t know which is my exit … or which bus is approaching,” Ceylan explains. “That kind of information can be provided with the WeWalk.”
