As libraries across the country celebrate National Library Week, many of them are accepting an alternative form of payment for overdue book fees. Those participating in a Food for Fines program will allow patrons to pay with donated nonperishable food items, and they typically waive $1 of fines for each item. The libraries then donate the food to a local food bank, so it’s a real win-win.
The Spokane Public Library in Washington, the Lompoc Public Library System in California, and the Thomas Beaver Free Library in Pennsylvania are some of the libraries participating in the charity event this month. Some libraries have other ways to pay off late fees without opening your wallet. At the Los Angeles County public libraries, anyone under 21 can wipe out their fines by reading more books!
