Summer Pet Danger: Fidelco Guide Dogs with Important Safety Tips!
Renee DiNino chats with Eliot Russman, President and CEO of Fidelco Guide Dogs. Listen to the interview below, and please take a moment to reviews some important safety reminders provided here too!
The statistics are staggering… even with car windows partially open:
- On a 78° day, the temperature inside the car can soar between 100 and 120 in just minutes.
- On a 90° day, the temperature inside a car can reach 160° in just 10 minutes.
- It’s very serious…exposure to these temperatures can result in brain damage from heatstroke and even death from suffocation.
What can someone do if they see a pet in a locked car on a hot day? Don’t waste time…call the police or fire department immediately. Take appropriate action as required!
So…best advice is never, never leave your dog in the car! Not even for “one quick minute.”
- Plan outdoor activities for early morning or late evening…Fidelco Guide Dog trainers start their work days to start at 6am and are back inside before the noontime heat;
- Make sure plenty of water is available for dogs and cats and other critters. And remember that dogs will need to be relieved more often and cats’ litter boxes will need to be change frequently.
- If homes are not air conditioned or air conditioning is limited to a room or two, please share it with pets. Floor fans can also help provide cooling breezes.
And we want to remind everyone that in just a few weeks, on Sunday, July 22nd, it’s Fidelco Guide Dogs 8th Annual Ride for Independence motorcycle ride that supports the Fidelco Guide Dogs program for blind veterans and first responders. I’ll be there with another Grand Marshal, Rob Dibble & Jamie McDonald for this police-escorted ride through the beautiful Farmington Valley…followed by Jamie & Cheryl McDonald’s delicious Bear’s BBQ.
We’re inviting all listeners to visit fidelco.org for details and to register. That’s fidelco.org. And please “like” our new Ride for Independence Facebook page for regular updates. It’s a family-friendly event with Bear’s BBQ for lunch and everyone is invited to attend.
