Summer Colonial Camp at the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden

Calling All Campers!

Summer Colonial Camp at the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden and The Hempsted Houses

CT Landmarks is giving Connecticut children a last chance to travel back in time at two fantastic historic sites. The first takes place at the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden in Suffield, Monday, July 31st through Friday, August 4th, from 10 am to 3 pm. Children ages 8 to 12, can don period costumes (or wear their everyday summer clothes!) and participate in the activities that took place at the Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden each and every day. Campers will learn about creating textiles (dyeing wool, knitting, sewing and spinning), westward expansion and trade (exploring maps and uncharted land), and school and home activities (classrooms, garden and crafts). Best of all is the opportunity to learn about the toys and play games of the past. A special surprise will await all on the final day when music & dancing fill the air!

Participants should bring a hearty lunch and snack each day, ice tea made from herbs grown in the Hatheway garden will be provided. The cost per child is $200 for the week, $175 for CTL members and for families with two or more children attending. Registration is required as space is limited. To register, contact the Phelps-Hatheway House at 860.668.0055 or email phelps.hatheway@ctlandmarks.org by July 1st.

The Phelps-Hatheway House & Garden is located at: 55 South Main Street in Suffield, CT and is open for regular tours from May through October. For hours and more information, visit www.ctlandmarks.org; or call (860) 668-0055.

Campers in the Southern part of the state can bring history to life with an unforgettable camp experience Monday, July 31st through Friday, August 4th from 9 am to 1 pm at the Hempsted Houses! Step back in time and enjoy the smell of fresh bread as you learn how to bake in our historic kitchen. Learn what school was like for children in the past, and try out the chores children of yesteryear were tasked with. When the “work” is done, play games of the past and create a diary to record your own history! Children will be guided along the way by great storytellers for a fun and educational week. $150 per child. Scholarships are available for New London residents and past participants. This camp is supported by the Chester Kitchings Family Foundation.

The Hempsted Houses are located at: 11 Hempsted Street, New London, CT. The site is open for tours May through October. For hours and more information, visit www.ctlandmarks.org; email hempsted@ctlandmarks.org; or call (860) 443-7949.
