A five-day operation across Florida recovered 163 missing children ranging in age from two months to 17 years old. Operation Statewide Shield brought together state, local and federal agencies and was described by officials as the state's first statewide child recovery initiative and the largest operation of its kind in Florida history.
The Tampa Bay area accounted for the most recoveries with 46, followed by Miami with 41 and Jacksonville with 32. Children were also recovered in the Orlando, Fort Myers, Pensacola and Tallahassee regions, with some recoveries extending to other states, Puerto Rico and other countries.
Officials say some of the children had been abused, neglected, exploited, trafficked, or exposed to other criminal activity. After being recovered, the children were connected with medical providers, child welfare professionals, victim advocates and other support services.
