A father in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward has electricity again after spending a week without power during dangerous summer heat. Joseph Brown says he, his 12-year-old son, and their two German Shepherds managed by using a cooler filled with ice, opening the windows, and eating cold sandwiches while trying to stay cool.
The dad says he fell behind on his bills after people broke into his home and stole the cash he’d earned along with equipment from his food truck business. During a visit to treat his dogs for heartworms, Genie Goldring, founder of the nonprofit The Inner Pup, found the home without electricity and contacted City Hall employees and Entergy to seek help restoring service.
After Goldring’s efforts, Brown's electricity was restored a few days later. He thanked The Inner Pup, saying, "It's not just my dogs that they're looking out for… they're looking out for the people in the community."
