A 28-year-old Navy veteran from Pensacola is recovering after waking up days before his planned funeral. Ethan Preseau had been declared brain dead after doctors found a severe heart infection, and his family had gathered at the hospital for an honor walk before organ donation was expected to take place.
But after life support was removed, his family noticed him responding to commands. His father, Jeffrey Preseau, says a nurse asked Ethan to stick out his tongue, and when he did, two nurses who had taken part in his honor walk returned and said, "Oh my gosh, this is a miracle."
Ethan is now smiling, laughing, using sign language and following commands as he prepares to transfer to a rehabilitation facility specializing in traumatic brain injuries. His family says his recovery is expected to be a long process, but they’re encouraged by the progress he’s already made.
