A firefighter who was off duty and enjoying some family time on Sunday morning became a hero for one family in Mehlville, Missouri. Greg Degreeff says his son noticed smoke near a neighbor’s window and his instincts kicked in as he sensed something was wrong. He rushed to check on the residents and discovered their home was on fire.
Degreeff saw the man who lives there, who said his wife was still inside. Despite the large amounts of smoke and heat, the firefighter went inside and found the woman, who he carried down the stairs and out of the home just in the nick of time. “Right as I got her out, I turned around to see if I could go back in,” he says. “But the smoke was already down to the ground. There was no going back in.”
Fire crews arrived moments later and say Degreeff’s actions likely saved the woman’s life. “Greg was off duty, but still recognized a problem,” says Jason Hendricks, Deputy Chief of the Mehlville Fire Department. “With no regard for his own safety, he stepped in and helped us out.” Now Hendricks is recommending that Degreeff be formally recognized for his heroism.
