My wife and I had a chance to see Elton John in concert almost 20 years ago. It was just him, his piano and a sold out crowd at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI. What normally took us an hour from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids took 2 because of some lake effect snow. Once we got there, it was pure magic watching a legend sing his hits. Oh, did I mention he was wearing a track suit? Yep, the performer on stage was wearing sweats. It was like he was practicing in his living room. Nobody cared, though, it was Elton Freakin' John.
Farewell Yellow Brick Road is how Elton John is saying goodbye. I watched his streaming concert and announcement on Wed (1/25) about his retirement and his reasons were noble. He wants to see his children grow up. He wants to attend their school events. He wants to help them with their homework.
Your child is born, and just like that they are in middle school, or graduating, or getting married. How did it all go by so quickly?
I remember when Charlie was born. I was texting my family updates using my flip phone. That was 2007, and the iPhone was just about to make its debut. Charlie will be 10 next week. Are you kidding me? So enjoy your children, Elton.
Of course, Elton is saying goodbye to the world -- which will last three years and 300 shows. So it's not like he's retiring next month. I have a list of his tour dates here
