ABOUT THE FAMILY

When Emma DelVecchio was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in 2007 at the age of 3, her parents Joe and Kelly found themselves thrown into an unfamiliar world of blood sugar checks, carb counting, insulin, worry-filled days and many sleepless nights. They could not imagine that their family would have to relive that life-changing day, but they did in 2010 when Joe was diagnosed at age 37. Six years later they received the heartbreaking news that their 6 year-old son Charlie also had T1D.

Since their first diagnosis, the DelVecchio family has made supporting JDRF a family effort. Their One Walk team, 3D, has raised nearly $25,000 over the past 5 years. Both Joe and Kelly have served as volunteer mentors, providing comfort and hope to newly diagnosed families and adults. Joe has also served on the Tee Up For A Cure committee, JDRF’s annual golf tournament. Following in her parents’ footsteps, Emma serves as a JDRF Youth Ambassador.

In recognition of their family’s commitment to JDRF’s mission to create a world without type 1 diabetes, JDRF is honoring the DelVecchio family as the 2018 Fund A Cure Family.
