Third-Grader Saves Choking Friend Day After Learning Heimlich

Kids never know when they might use something they learned at school in real life, but a little girl in Massachusetts learned the Heimlich maneuver and used it to save her friend the next day. Shailyn Ryan and Keeira Silvia were eating lunch at Marguerite Peaslee Elementary School in Northborough when Keira started choking on her hot dog. Luckily, nine-year-old Shailyn had just learned the life-saving procedure for choking the day before, so she used it to save Keira.

Shailyn says she wasn’t even nervous because she knew exactly how to do it and it worked. Both families are thankful for her quick response and the girls are forever bonded by the experience. And Keira’s mom,Noel, reminds, “Kids are capable of a lot more than we give them credit for.”
