During her career as a bus driver for the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS), Irena Ivic has seen a lot, but she had a surprising new experience on the job last month. On the morning of December 22nd, she was driving when she saw a baby alone on a highway overpass. It was freezing outside in the Wisconsin winter and the tot was barefoot and only wearing a onesie, according to the MCTS.
Ivic immediately stopped her bus and ran to save the child, who was crying and scared. She called for help and a passenger offered her coat to bundle the baby up. The little guy actually fell asleep in Ivic’s arms before firefighters and police arrived. MCTS report that the child, who was less than a year old, was unharmed, just very cold and frightened.
This week, Ivic is being recognized for her heroic actions by Milwaukee County. And this isn’t the first time one of MCTS’s bus drivers has found a lost or missing child. Over the last few years, drivers have found nine kids.
