How Americans Are Getting In the Spooky Spirit This Halloween

Time is running out to perfect those costumes and gather candy for trick-or-treaters. A new survey from the Associated Press reveals how people across the country plan to celebrate Halloween.

  • Nearly two-thirds of people are celebrating Halloween in some way this year.
  • Parents with kids under 18 are even more likely to have plans. Almost 80% of parents with younger kids say they’ll be celebrating the holiday, compared to 60% of adults without young children.
  • 55% of parents plan to go trick-or-treating with their kids and dress them in costumes. Parents are more likely to dress up in costumes than non-parents (35% compared to 19%).
  • 9% of adults get their four-legged friends into the holiday spirit, dressing them up in costumes.
  • Candy is every kid’s favorite part of Halloween! A third of grown-ups say they will be passing out candy. And only 5% plan to give out healthy snacks.
  • 3 in 10 adults get into the spooky spirit with decorations in their home or yard.
  • 1 in 4 people plan to carve a jack-o'-lantern this year.
  • 26% of parents at 18% of non-parents say they’re going to a Halloween party.
  • 31% say they’ll be watching a scary movie to embrace the haunted holiday.
